Top Gun (NES) Is A Guaranteed Crash Out Waiting To Happen

When I think of Top Gun (NES) I always think of trying to land that plane and crashing in the ocean. How many times did you slam that controller on the floor because you couldn’t nail it? Aside from that, refueling the plane was another difficult task that felt impossible! Why did they. make this game so hard? And yet when you watch a full play through of the game its not that long. So where most people died at was a third of the way in.

my top gun experience

When I was little I always crashed that plane and then gave up after 4 tries. I didn’t want to spend so much time to get to that point unlike a save state now you can keep reloading it. Anyway I seen my brother pass it occasionally but now I’m wondering if he actually knew what he was doing or he just got lucky? Sometimes he got to refuel the plane as well but I can only count with one hand how many times he’s done that successfully.

But that intro music is so nostalgic it lives in my head and its so catchy. Aside from the nightmares that I mentioned it is decently challenging but manageable. The sound effects and the POV as a fighter pilot was so cool to me. Since this is one of the first games that I played as a kid I will always hold this title dear to me. Even years after the NES into the PS1 I would still go back to play it in hopes to land that plane.

What’s the secret to landing and refueling?

Some people never realized this as a kid and even some adults but its all in the speed and altitude. You have to stay within that range for altitude 200 and speed 288. Even though its in the manual I never had it because my brother traded a game with someone for Top Gun. But on the side readings it does show it, I just wasn’t understanding it as a kid.

For refueling you need patience and just try to follow the instructions of speeding up and making sure it lands on the X. Again you need patience because I tend to get anxious and I fumble so badly.

what do gamers think about top gun?

Top Gun is a classic game that most gamers remember unless they never played it. The Music and gameplay is memorable for good reasons, its pleasant and truly a fun game to play for the most part. HOWEVER! The landing and refueling are very frustrating for everyone. Can you imagine flying through the air so well and shooting down all of your enemies without being hit? Only to crash that plane a couple of times and restarting the game.

I still plan on revisiting the game to play and see if I can master the refueling. I might even do a livestream so people can laugh at my frustration. However I do have a play through video that I’ve done and you can laugh at my misfortunes with that or watch for nostalgia.
