Why Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 (NES) Is Guaranteed Memorable

It’s December 1990 and this awesome game just hit the stores in North America for the NES. If you were a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan then you asked your parents to get a copy of the game. I remember my brothers coming home with it and we fired it up on our console. At this point I was already watching the cartoons and had some TMNT toys. Yeah, we were already fans of this awesome franchise.

why i loved Teenage mutant ninja turtles 2

Now let me explain why this game is so awesome in my honest opinion. The music was just so good I can still vividly hear it in my head. The visuals looked great for an 8-bit console, especially the colors. The game was challenging but it was still fun unlike its predecessor which everyone hated. Even though you can’t play 4- players, you can at least play co-op.

Each turtle has their own unique weapons which gives them different reach. Before narrowing down who my favorite was, I played with all 4. Nowadays I pick Raph because I can relate with his character. Even though he doesn’t have as much reach as Donnie or Leo I can still make do. And from time to time I liked picking Mikey.

The journey

The stages were so cool, I loved how you went everywhere from burning buildings to the sewers, throughout the streets of New York and into the technodrome. There were plenty of stages to go through and the design of each one was amazing. Each filled with their own unique bad guys besides the typical foot soldiers. They all had their own challenges but you eventually find a strategy.

Shell shocked!

This Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game has some really challenging bosses starting with Rocksteady and Bebop. Make no mistake these two are not that easy to handle but at least you fight them separately. Then you fight Baxter Stockman in human form and he’s just annoying to hit. In the 4th stage you fight Tora and I was never able to beat him alone, I always needed my brothers help.

You later fight Baxter again but in fly form and I personally feel that he is more challenging. By the 6th stage you fight Granitor and he is just rocking you left and right. Then our heroes are up against Shogun with his detached head flying around you’re barely surviving. Next you have to deal with Granites buddy, General Traag. And he’s mad as hell at you.

Alright now its the homestretch and you are hoping to not die because by now you ran out of continues. Krang enters the chat and he wants to take you out. His giant robot walker is giving you the business.

We finally meet the Shredder, what can I say besides he’s the most difficult for many reasons. Not only does he deliver lots of damage but he duplicates himself and you have to attack the correct one. Once his body double is gone you have to attack his true form before he multiplies again. He eventually loses his helmet after you knock it off of his dome. Do this a bunch of times and then he’s finally defeated.

Final thoughts on tmnt 2: the arcade (NES)

Yes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 was hard but it’s still so much fun. Even after chaotically losing I would take breaks and eventually come back to it. I played this game for the arcade and there is a bit of a difference aside from the graphics. But I still prefer it on the NES and maybe its because thats where I first played it. It reminds me when my brother came home from school with some cheat codes. We did the cheat and went to whatever stage we wanted. Truth be told thats how we went to every stage because it was hard!
